Do you have pets? Kids? Both? Make sure you’re getting a flooring material that is up to the task to meet your family’s needs. Here’s at GAIA we will help you pick the floor of your dreams.
You need flooring that is suited for a high moisture environments, such as ceramic or porcelain tile, or vinyl plank.
First, think about how the room is used. In high-traffic areas, consider a dense loop pile carpet made of durable nylon. For rooms with outside or pet access, or where food and drinks are often served, you’ll want a low-pile carpet with soil- and stain-resistant treatments, and one that hides the tracks from frequent vacuuming. For low-activity spaces like bedrooms and formal living rooms, a soft, plush Saxony offers luxurious comfort.
That depends on where you want to install it. Both solid and engineered wood floors are made using real wood, so both are environmentally friendly. Solid wood flooring is exactly what the name implies – a solid piece of wood from top to bottom. The thickness of solid wood flooring can vary but generally ranges from 3/4″ to 5/16″. Solid wood can be used in any room that is above grade (above ground). One of the many benefits of solid wood flooring is that it can be sanded and refinished many times. Solid wood floors are ideal for family/living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens and powder rooms.
Engineered wood floors are real wood floors that are manufactured using multiple layers of wood veneers. The layers that you cannot see can be the same species, or of different species. The grain of each layer runs in perpendicular directions, which makes it very dimensionally stable. This means that the wood will expand and contract less than solid wood flooring during fluctuations in humidity and temperature. Engineered floors can be nailed or stapled to a wood subfloor or glued down to a wood or concrete subfloor. This makes engineered wood floors ideal for slab and basement installations, but they can be used in any room above, on or below grade. While this type of flooring can be sanded and refinished, it cannot be done as many times as solid wood flooring.
Every floor you purchase is an investment, and like most things, proper upkeep will ensure that you get the most out of your investment for as long as possible. Solid hardwood floors might need to be refinished over time. Carpet needs to be professionally cleaned at least once a year. If you have an active home and find yourself pressed for time, it might be better to choose a surface that cleans quickly like laminate or Vinyl Plank.
Don’t shy away from a new surface just because the rest of your home has a uniform type of flooring. Your new floor can complement the overall layout even if it has a different texture or is a new category altogether. Work with one of our experts to create a blended feel that transitions well throughout the home.
